How We Repaired Cracked RV Fender Skirts Instead of Replacing Them
Our fifth-wheel fender skirts were gray, chalky, and cracked. Replacement was going to cost roughly $600 for the pair, so we tried a campground-friendly repair using a plastic hot-staple tool, plastic epoxy, surface prep, and paint.
The short version: We stitched the cracks from the back with heated staples, reinforced the repair with plastic epoxy, allowed it to harden, then cleaned and refinished the visible surface. The goal was not a quick cosmetic patch—it was a stronger skirt that looked good again without buying two replacements.
Why We Repaired Them
When we priced replacement fender skirts for our trailer, they were about $300 each. We needed two. That put the replacement route at roughly $600 before any other supplies or shipping.
More importantly, we did not want to patch the cracks just to have them open again a month later. We wanted to stabilize the plastic, reinforce the damaged areas, and then improve the appearance.

The Repair Process
Remove the skirt carefully. We worked from the ends toward the middle and left the center screws for last so the already-cracked skirt stayed supported instead of dropping and breaking further.
Lay it face-down. That gave us access to the back side of every crack and let us reinforce the damage where the repair would be less visible.
Bring the cracks back into alignment. On the larger cracks, we flexed the plastic gently to bring the two sides as close together as practical.
Stitch the crack with hot staples. The small heated staples melt into the plastic and bridge the damaged area. We worked along the crack rather than relying on a single staple.
Trim the staple legs. The cutters included with our kit were not especially robust, so a stronger pair with more leverage was helpful.
Reinforce the back with plastic epoxy. We used JB Weld Plastic Bonder on the back side, working it around the stapled areas without building a large crown of material.
Let the repair harden before reinstalling. We left ours alone overnight before moving on to the cosmetic work.
Prep and refinish the front. Once the structure was stable, we cleaned/prepped the visible side and repainted the skirt.
One of the nice things about this kind of RV repair: much of it can be done right at the campsite with fairly simple tools.
What We Learned
Support the skirt during removal
A cracked plastic panel is easiest to damage when it is half-detached and unsupported. Leaving the middle fasteners until last gave us a controlled way to remove it.
Do the structural repair from the back
The hot staples and epoxy do the heavy lifting. Working from the back let us make the repair strong without turning the visible face into a mess.
Small epoxy batches are easier
The plastic bonder we used has a short working time. For a large triple-axle skirt, smaller batches would have been easier than trying to spread one big mix before it began setting.
Wear the gloves you recommend
Yes, this lesson made the original video. The repair included epoxy on a finger and a ruined shirt. That still came out cheaper than two replacement fender skirts—but gloves would have been smarter.
Be careful with the heat
It is possible to get too aggressive with the hot-staple tool and melt through thin plastic. We did that in one spot. Work slowly and remember that RV plastic varies in thickness and material.

Was It Perfect?
Not in the “factory fresh from one foot away” sense. It was closer to what we jokingly called the one-to-six-foot test: from normal viewing distance, it looked dramatically better, and more importantly, the cracked areas were stabilized instead of flopping around.
For us, that was a much better outcome than spending roughly $600 on replacement pieces just because the original plastic had aged and cracked.
